Flying Lesson No. Nine
Your Checklist - For The Strength of Youth
Checklists ‑ Pilots use checklist for practically every phase of flight beginning with the preflight and concluding with engine shut down and includes everything in between. Check lists are important because there are many procedures that must be followed for a safe flight. It could be disastrous if a critical step is missed.
Gear Up Landing ‑ Occasionally we hear or read about a gear up landing. The reason for this is that the pilot, not following a check list, failed to extend the landing gear. This results in major damage to the aircraft and possibly serious injury or even death.
A student at our base was distracted while preparing to land and he failed to follow the Before Landing Checklist and did not extend the landing gear. As he continued the approach the landing gear warning horn began to sound. Oblivious to what was going on he tried to silence the warning horn. The instructor pilot extended the landing gear before it was too late. Needless to say this student was eliminated from pilot training.

Testimony of guidelines on the First Presidency’s checklists ‑ A way to use the First Presidency's checklist in your life is to identify the one guideline that is the most challenging for you and focus on it. Ponder what you need to do to improve and write it down. In all your prayers ask for strength and direction. Review your progress each day. As you begin to see improvement then pick the next guideline to focus on. After just a few weeks your efforts will turn into habits. Habits allow us to do things without as much effort or thought as in the beginning. Missionaries use an inspired system of planning, checklists, and goals. You will succeed in your most important long term goal of eternal life if you use short term goals and the inspired checklists we have been given.
